Migrating from Nest to Google

I’ve been contemplating migrating from Nest to Google, but I’m concerned about what I’ve been reading.

We have the thermostat, smoke detectors and two doorbells. As of now, only one doorbell has all the features due to our current subscription. Migrating will give the other doorbell full functionality, but I fear I will have to use two apps.

Can someone confirm the benefits and pitfalls of migrating?

We migrated our Nest Account to a Google Account in 2020, and while we can view our 1st gen cameras and doorbells in the Google Home app and on the home.google.com website, we still need to use the Google Nest app and the home.nest.com website for full functionality, while using the Google Home app and the home.google.com website for our two 2nd gen cameras.

The main reason we migrated was that, with several cameras and doorbells, the 2nd gen Nest Aware Plus subscription was (and is) cheaper than 1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions (https://store.google.com/product/nest_aware?hl=en-US&modal=upgrade-pricing).

The Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E, which get installed in the Google Nest app, still seem to have incomplete functionality in the Google Home app (based on posts in this forum; we don't have a Nest thermostat). And while we don't have any Nest Protects, they still can only be installed in the Google Nest app.

I’ve read you need to use a different gmail email address for the migration, is this true?

Not necessarily.

If you want to migrate to a Google (gmail) Account that you are already using to administer Google Nest devices like Nest Hubs or Nest Minis in the Google Home app, then you can use the workaround described in the post below, under "Troubleshoot account migration issues" | "Error message: Google Account is already linked with another Nest account":

When we migrated, I migrated to a gmail account that I had never used for anything related to Google Nest, and we had no problems at all.
