Google - Nest Doorbell Wired (2nd Generation) - installation

Hi Folks, good evening/morning/afternoon!

Can someone please help me with the installation?

I am a bit lost! The house has no wiring and no existing doorbell/chime etc.

I really have very basic questions regarding the power adapter rating, chime wiring connections, and if I can also link the doorbell to Google Nest mini.

I have managed to drill a hole right next to the main door and I have a power socket (indoors) behind the wall.

If you have a power socket near the door, you could use this adapter from Google; you run the wire through the wall and wire it to your doorbell and plug it in inside:

If you enable "Visitor announcements" in the Google Home app for your new doorbell, you can get doorbell visitor announcements on your Nest Mini:

Well you could run doorbell wires to a conventional doorbell transformer tied into your electrical system, and to a conventional doorbell chime. I don't have any recommendations on that; we just used our old chime and got a new transformer when we replaced our old regular doorbells with Nest Hellos.

For our 3rd (unwired) entrance, we got a Google Nest Hello Doorbell, an OhmKat Power Adapter for the Nest Hello, and an OhmKat Wireless Universal Doorbell Chime, but they're designed for the older Nest Hello and not the new 2nd Gen Google Nest Doorbell.

i came across this video (https://youtu.be/Ktsb5Lo_kmc) . At 3.38 min, it says if chime connector is not installed then it can damage the google nest doorbell.

Hence, I am still trying to figure out how to install the doorbell and chime connector when there is no existing traditional doorbell and chime system in place?

I believe the Google Nest power adapter I linked to above is designed to work without a chime connector, since there is no chime. Perhaps Google Nest Support will verify.

We've used the OhmKat Power Adapter for the Nest Hello for 10 months now; it is specifically designed to work without the chime connector.

Hi @MplsCustomer , yes. I found the power adapter you advised and tagged it.

I just want to ensure that I have the correct wiring diagram from Google for the setup that does not involve use of traditional doorbell system wiring. It is not a low cost product so I (am sure many others) would need some clear instructions. So far I am unable to find in Google’s help section.

Thanks for getting back to us and I'm sorry to hear if you're having trouble installing your Nest doorbell wired (2nd Gen). To confirm, do you have a transformer? If so, hit this link to check the required power and voltage.

The chime connector allows the chime's wires to deliver constant power to the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) and Nest Doorbell (wired) and protects your chime from damage. In addition, without the chime connector, you might experience chime buzzing or unexpected chimes.

In case you have a transformer, you may try these diagrams:

Hi @EmersonB Emerson, yes as @MplsCustomer kindly suggested I got hold of the OhmKat 20 VAC 500mA power supply. So it meets power requirements.

Is there a diagram that includes the Chime connector along with the Nest 2nd Gen Doorbell (wired)? Assuming there is no existing chime and doorbell system.

I referred to the OhmKat Power Adapter just as an example of how it is specifically designed to work with the Nest Hello doorbell without a "chime connector".

Since Google Nest sells the "Ninety7 Indoor Power Adapt for Google Nest Doorbell" as compatible with the Google Nest Doorbell (battery) and the Google Nest Doorbell (wired), and refers to using a Google Nest speaker or display as your chime, I think your question to Emerson @EmersonB is for them to provide a diagram for how that "Ninety7" adapter should be wired with the 2nd Gen Google Nest Doorbell.

So can you share the wiring diagram that includes Chime connector for a brand-new Google 2nd generation (wired) doorbell installation (i.e., no existing doorbell or traditional chime)?
I do not want to exclude the Chime connector from the setup for the reason you have stated.
And, yes I have found the power supply adapter to meet both power and AC voltage requirements.

Gotcha, thanks for sharing the information with us. Let’s check — there’s no available wiring diagram for a Nest Doorbell (2nd gen, wired) without an existing chime box and transformer. You may use an indoor power adapter for your doorbell as its power source. The chime connector or puck is only needed if you’re using an indoor chime. Please see the wiring diagram below (with existing chime and transformer):

Sorry, I am perplexed. Unfortunately, Google does not clearly state installation instructions with no existing chime setup. I guess I will just have to power the doorbell with OhmKat Power Adapter. It provides compatible AC power and voltage.

It was this Google video that alarmed me - https://youtu.be/Ktsb5Lo_kmc where it warns (@3.38 min) that if the chime connector is not installed then it can damage the google nest doorbell.

Hi @EmersonB I have installed it directly with a new transformer and using nest mini as a speaker for announcements. So all is working fine.
I would be looking for an option to use a chime, but for now, that is on the nice-to-have list. Thank you!
