New Chromecast will not connect to WiFi

I recently purchased a Chromecast with Google TV to replace my older Chromecast.

When I try to connect I can:

1) Get the Chromecast to recognize the remote

2) Get the Chromecast connected to my phone via Bluetooth so the first steps of setting up work fine

It is the connection to WiFi that fails. I have tried switching frequencies (now trying 2.4 GHz exclusively), I have reset the router, factory reset the new device, done all the various steps in the trouble shooting. I even did a factory reset on my old Chromecast, and it set up seamlessly.

I am on the verge of just returning the new Chromecast. Anything to try that is not in the troubleshooting list?

@kwajspeedo is your router set to block unknown MAC addresses? Something in the router set up called "MAC Filtering" probably should be called MAC blocking, but I'd check settings in your router setup for that. It's used to keep unknown MAC addresses/IDs from connecting to your network.

Thanks forvthe suggestion. I don't believe I have that turned on. It is not exposed as a choice in the phone app that manages the router. I will check to make sure when I get home. I usually have no trouble connecting. My old Chromecast connected fine but worked better on the 2.4 GHz link. I tried both 2.4 and 5.0 for this one.

I do know 5gHz is the desired speed for the new one that's for sure. How far away are you from the router? Sometimes with the faster speed, minor obstructions can cause problems with connections etc as it doesn't travel as far or negotiate obstructions as well as 2.4. So you might want to tinker with that if the MAC filter isn't the culprit.

Chromecast is about 15 feet away from the router. No walls. Neither 2.4 or 5.0 work.

In the troubleshooting guide it recommended 2.4. You are not the only one to recommend 5.0, so who knows. That you for the suggestions though.

Thanks for the reply. I returned it. I am still using my original, earlier generation, Chromecast with no issues.

That is understandable, I would probably do the same if I were also in your position if your older device worked just fine. Did you have anything we could address today, or should I go ahead and lock up the thread?
