There is no security $ restrictions options on the menu. How do you enable install from unknown sources for my device

You should be able to find that option in Settings>Privacy.

Not seeing it there? Where are you located?

Which Chromecast device are you using?

Our other Community Expert @Cathal_S suggested that you may need to turn on developer mode first.

Settings/About and then click on (Android TV OS build) seven times.

Sorry, I asked which CC you had but you already posted it is the new HD model.

I am going to research the new Chromecast and the option to add the unknown devices. It may be a limitation for that model.

Edit: Also escalated to our Community Specialists. They may have documentation related to this.

Have you tried to install anything yet? If you've got dev mode enabled you may be prompted somewhere else in the process to allow.

I have tried all the tricks, downloaded something to install no prompt comes up it fails

Just a quick update. I raised this as an escalation to our Community Specialists from Nest. There should be no changes in the settings of the new Chromecast (HD). They suggest to reboot the device and try to plug it in on a different HDMI port on the TV. If the issue persists, please factory reset the device.

Please let us know how this goes so I can forward your results over to them again.

Jumping in. I have the same problem. I performed a factory reset and the "unknown apps" option appeared in Privacy section but has disappeared minutes later, after installing other apps (SEND FILES TO TV and FILE MANAGER) from the PlayStore.

I have the 4K and HD version and I have managed to sideload on the 4K version. Just looking to replicate on the HD version.

Trying to sideload .apk file with FileCommander. Developer Options IS enabled. I go to Apps->Security, but "Install from Unknown Sources" is missing. It's not grayed out - it's missing - so I can't enable it. There are only 2 opts there, related to scanning of apps.

If I open the .apk in FileCommander, then the file contents of the .apk archive are displayed. There is no Install option.

I am following instructions which, I suspect, are for Chromecast 4k. Has the method changed with Chromecast HD?

Yes, having the same issue once factory reset, you can find security and restrictions and unknown sources as soon as you install an app those settings disappear

I tried both Factory Reset, and also changed HDMI port. It made no difference.

Chromecast HD in Developer Mode, Settings->Security does not reveal the Unknown Apps option, so apps cannot be sideloaded.

Looking at this thread, it's clear that more than one (Chromecast HD) device is affected, and the ability to sideload with Chromecast HD was not regression tested. I'm therefore returning the device.

I bought it to replace my Chromecast 4k which failed after a year, and I didn't really need 4k.

Based on this experience, I think I'll look at other vendors to replace the defective 4k.

Having the same issue. I notice this thread is marked as solved but it definitely isn't solved. After doing a factory reset, Privacy and Security is there and i can choose unknown sources. As soon as I install an app, the menu changes and I just see privacy and unknown sources is gone.
