Program the mute button on my remote

I just unboxed my Chromecast with Google TV. Just about everything works. There is one notable exception. My sound is controlled by my Sony Receiver. The Google TV remote paired fine with the receiver's volume controls, but the receiver's mute button didn't pair. I've tried all ten of the codes suggested for my receiver. Is there anyway I can manually pair my remote's mute button with the mute function of the receiver?

Access Google Chromecast with Google TV Settings menu. Select Remote & Accessories -> Set up remote buttons.

Is you AV receiver listed under Devices?

Which buttons are listed as available for set up under Google TV Remote Buttons?

Do you se any Mute button listed there? If you don't, then you can't setup the Mute button to mute the sound on your AV receiver.

In essence, you are mutting the source, not the sound, and the source device is Google Chromecast with Google.

Sadly, this advice didn't help. The "Set up remote buttons" feature gives you only three button categories to customize: 1) Volume control, 2) Power button, and 3) Input button. The "Volume control" category doesn't differentiate between volume and mute. Eventually I decided that my Receiver was just too old to be supported by my Google TV remote. Based on that assumption I replaced my receiver with a brand new sound bar. I then customized the "Volume control" category to point to my sound bar. Now the volume up, volume down, and mute buttons work just fine. I found the solution, but it required new hardware.

Even if your AV receiver was, as you say, dated, you could still mute the sound by programming the volume buttons to control the Chromecast volume.

Alternatively, you could have used a HDMI switch between Google Chromecast with Google TV and your AV receiver / soundbar / TV, and mute the sound with the HDMI switch or even with your existing AV receiver remote.

Replacing your existing AV receiver with a new soundbar is kind of a big investment, just to be able to mute the sound with GCGTV remote.

Anyway, if you are happy with your equipment, that's what matters.
