Setup Google TV without a remote

My Google TV remote control has died with what looks to me like a hardware issue. The advice from the help line was to factory reset the chromecast which I thought unlikely to help but you have to go through the script right?

Unfortunately having factory reset the chromecast I now can't set it up at all as it stops at the point it wants to pair the remote. There's no chromecast wifi so the google home app can't see it. It's not on my wifi anymore becasue it's defaulted so I can't control it with my phone. It's connected via CEC-HDMI but it doesn't respond to the TV remote. If I try pairing it with an XBox controller it has a go but then fails and goes back round the loop.

As far as I can see there is no way to setup a factory reset Chromecast with google TV without a remote control - anybody know different?

First, use the Google Home application on your phone, wile you are connected to your WiFi network, to find the device, add it to the home application and give it the same WiFi network.

Then use the Google TV application or the Google Android TV remote app.

Alternatively, Tyou can try and connect the Google Chromecast with Google TV to the internet using your router LAN wired port and a powered USB-C hub.

Have you tried to use the remote, with fresh batteries inside, close to the device?

Because the chromecast is factory reset and stuck trying to pair a remote Google Home can't see it.

I tried the remote with new batteries, factory reset, etc. but it looks like it's dead, Jim. No lights no nothing.

Using a powered USB-C hub with ethernet is a brilliant idea - thanks for that suggestion. Sadly the only hub I have doesn't have ethernet so I haven't been able to try this out.

In the end I have managed to get an exchange of the dead remote under warranty so all's well that ends well.
