Chromecast w/ Google TV regularly needs to have hard restart

Two of my CwGTV (4k) constantly go to sleep and won't wake with the remote. I need to unplug the Chromecast and do a hard restart. I have done a factory reset. I have tried different HDMI ports. It keeps happening. I haven't noticed it on my CwGTV (HD). It's getting annoying as we have to do this every few days. I read others have this same issue, but I didn't see steps to resolve it. Any fix on the works?

I should add that all are on latest firmware.

I would be annoyed as well if I had to hard restart the Chromecast frequently, so I'd be happy to help you look into this. First, I would make sure your TV doesn't have any power saving mode enabled that could be affecting the HDMI-CEC connectivity to the Chromecast. Then, if you are able to, I would test the Chromecast devices on another TV to see if the problem persists across devices.

I believe the TVs do have power saving features.. and both TVs with devices that have this issue are Samsung's - although one is considerably older. Both CCwGTV power sources are plugged into the wall, not the TV. My expectation would be that the TV wake when I click the CCwGTV remote. The newer TV wakes (perhaps due to other buttons we hit), but the Chromecast do not turn on. The TV shows no signal on HDMI. When I unplug the Chromecast and plug it back in it starts and works normally.

I will say it doesn't happen each and every time. Sometimes it works and the TV and CCwGTV is on. But other times no joy.

I apologize for the late response on this thread, and thank you for being patient! In this case, go ahead and go into the TV's settings and see if you can disable the power-saving options, as well as double-check the HDMI-CEC settings. It's a possibility that the HDMI-CEC settings are disabled, or perhaps they are only available on specific HDMI ports. In that case, try plugging the Chromecast into different HDMI ports.

Hi Jeran,

Yes, these are the initial tests I often go back and double check... they are definitely on. Both have HDMI-CEC enabled, and both do have a power saving option to black out the screen. ~7 of 10 times it wakes from the black screen on the newer Samsung without having the input issue. The TV screen always comes on when I push the chromecast remote button, but the chromecast itself does not fire up. I assume that the screen is turned on via the IR on the remote.

I have even unplugged the TV's from the power outlet as I have heard that this helps 'reset' the HDMI-CEC protocol.

I have noticed that if I change the HDMI source to TV and back to HDMI 1, the chromecast comes back. This is better than restarting the Chromecast, but still a nuisance.

I can also say that HDMI-CEC is active on all HDMI ports... as I can enable the TV using a firestick on another HDMI port on the newer TV.

On the older TV.. HDMI-CEC is less reliable. Occasionally neither chromecast or firetv will awaken the TV.. HOWEVER, when the TV is awakened, firetv always turns on but in the same fashion Chromecast sometimes does not. (if this makes sense).

I'm really sorry, this thread got mixed up in the back-end and wasn't taken care of. Are you still experiencing these same issues? It sounds like you have tried all of the troubleshooting steps that I would recommend. It is possible that there is an issue with the Chromecast itself, or with the HDMI-CEC implementation on your TV. If you have not already done so, I would recommend contacting Chromecast support for further assistance. They may be able to provide you with more specific troubleshooting steps. If you would like to speak with Chromecast Support, please fill out this form.

In the meantime, you may want to try using a different remote to control your Chromecast. If you have a universal remote, you may be able to program it to control your Chromecast. You can also try using the Google Home app to control your Chromecast using the virtual remote.
