Chromecast stops during streaming

Hi there

When casting media from MacBook in VLC using the playback - renderer function, media will stop randomly after 10-20 minutes. The following normally happens.

Media stops playing.
The Chromecast is no longer visible in the VLC renderer menu.
The Chromecast is also not visible in other apps such as Google Home and Google Chrome.
We wait 2-3 minutes, reset router, reset Chromecast.
Close VLC and reopen, disable and renable wifi on MacBook laptop
Connection sometimes is restored. Other times we just wait for 1-2 minutes without resetting anything and it works.
We have tried different media files and formats.

Also occasionally happens with other apps such as chrome. Streaming through Spotify is very reliable. Netflix and YouTube don't have as many issues, but they do randomly lose connection from time to time.

We did an isolation test:

Took MacBook and Chromecast to a different house
Factory reset and connected chrome cast
Connected to the wifi and router at the different house.
Streamed the same media file in VLC

Streaming was reliable using the different wifi and router setup, with only 1 drop out during 2-4 hours of playback. I have a feeling we need to adjust settings on our router to fix it, but I'm not sure where to start.

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. Normally, the Chromecast device doesn’t require anything specific from the router settings, as long as it is a typical home Wi-Fi setup (nothing complex). But it still depends on the router, and if it really is required, then check the following:

Some programs require UDP ports and DNS addresses to allow devices like Chromecast to connect. The necessary ports and DNS addresses are listed below:

Ports:

Outgoing UDP Multicast on ports 1900 and 5353
Incoming UDP Unicast on arbitrary ports > 53 and 123
Outgoing HTTP on ports 8008, 8009, 80, and 443

DNS:

Chromecast uses the following Google public DNS addresses:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
