I'm using this to show rpg maps via TV screen. Is there a way to cast the maps from my desktop files while simultaneously play audio from YouTube also through the TV? I thought I had it working before, but this weekend it would only let me cast screen and would not play audio from a tab in the background.

I know how challenging it is when you're having issues casting to your Chromecast (2nd gen). Let's dig deeper into this. A few questions: do you have the same issues when casting different cast-enabled apps like YouTube or Spotify? Have you tried using a different device to cast like phones/tablets?

Please try these steps below:

Make sure that your Chromecast (2nd gen) is within 15-20 ft. away from the router to get enough signal from your network.
Reboot your Chromecast (2nd gen) and router by disconnecting them from the power source and leave them unplugged for 1 minute. Once done, plug them back one at a time with intervals.
