Attaching external USB drive to Chromecast w/google tv

I'm trying to attach an external usb drive to Chromecast w/google TV (4k). The drive is formated in FAT. It worked in the beginning but now Chromecast always shows the drive is safely ejected (no matter how many times I unplug and plug the drive back in). The strange thing is the drive is correctly recognised by Chromecast (the volume name is displayed properly).

Any suggestion for a solution? Thanks.

maybe the drive is using too much power. Which kind of USB hub do you use? Does it provide enough power to handle external drives?

The drive has it own power input, so I don't think power is the issue.
