IR portion of chromecast remote has limited range

I originally had a problem finding codes that would power on/off and change the volume on my Android TV. Then I discovered that the IR transmitter in the Chromecast remote has a range of 3 to 4 feet. Is there some secret setting that I missed? I have changed the batteries and checked for any film restricting the emitter. Any suggestions other then moving the couch closer would be great!

Hi mmambwe,

Thanks for posting here. The Chromecast Voice Remote’s buttons (power, volume, input) will use the infrared (IR) functions to control the devices it was set up with (TV, AV receiver, soundbar, etc.).

Please note that not all brands and/or models are compatible with it, and you may have noticed that some of the compatible devices may only control two or one function (power, volume, input), which means that’s as far as the remote can control on that device.

Are you saying that all Chromecast remotes have a IR range of 3 to 4 feet?

Thanks for asking. In a perfect world, it should reach around 20–25 feet. It requires a line-of-sight, and obstructions and interference weaken it. How long have you been using it? We look forward to your response.

I purchased the ChromeCast in late September to use on an existing TV. The remote has never worked past 4 feet.

Hi Markw23,

Thanks for the reply. Let’s try this workaround and let me know how it goes:

Remove the batteries and give it a 2 to 3 minute rest.
While the batteries are out, press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds to fully drain any static power left on the chipset/motherboard of the Chromecast Voice remote, then release the button.
Let the remote rest again for 2 to 3 minutes. Take this time to unplug the Chromecast device from power and give it a 1 minute rest before you plug it back in.
Test it and observe.
If it persists, you can factory reset the remote one last time and pair it again.
