Starting a different stream on phone or tablet after sending first stream to Chromecast?

Hello,

It used to be possible to use a phone or tablet to send something a Chromecsst device, and then "disconnect" the phone or tablet once the Chromecast had taken over, thus freeing up the phone of tablet to watch something else.

Unfortunately this is no longer working.

Even if I reboot my device after the Chromecast has taken over the stream, the moment I reopen the YouTube app it immediately locks back onto the Chromecast.

Any idea how to do this now?

If you are trying to use the same SERVICE, it probably won't ever work.

That's because the service will probably detect that you're using the same account to do two sessions and will stop. Also, some services check in with the device every so often. If you've disconnected, they assume something has gone wrong and you've lost control and need them to stop.

You are more likely to be able to do this if you use different services; like starting Netflix, then going to YouTube and watching that on your phone.

I want to use my phone or tablet to start a stream on YouTube, and then cast it to the Chromecast.

Nature scenery videos, for example.

Then, I want to use my phone or tablet to watch unrelated videos at the same time.

It used to work just fine, all you had to do was tell the YouTube app to disengage from the Chromecast, and the Chromecast would keep playing. You could regain access to it easily using the ongoing notification made available by the Google Home app.

This is what no longer works. And it's not about restricting how many streams can be active at the same time. I can stream nature scenery videos from YouTube to several Chromecasts at the same time without issue, and watch regular content on other devices at the same time.

But the way the device becomes locked onto the Chromecast now and can't be disengaged is the problem.

Hey there SJC44322,

This is intended functionality. Since it's essentially your account being used by the streaming service, so two sessions cannot go at once. I'm not confident how you got that to work before, but casting was not designed to work that way, unfortunately. Byteguy summed it up better than I could have!

Why do you bother casting from your phone's YouTube application, when you already have YouTube on your Chromecast device? Launch the video you want from Chromecast YouTube application and watch another video on your phone's YouTube application.
