Switching my Samsung tv on and off using google nest mini

Hi. I have recently had a new Samsung smart TV (with Google assistant built in) and a Google nest mini. I also have a chromecast which is plugged into HDMI 2 (which is the CEC one). If my TV is switched to HDMI 2, when I ask the nest mini to switch the TV off or on, it does, but it doesn't work if I'm on either HDMI 1 or 3. Is this normal or should I able to switch off the TV regardless of which HDMI I am on?

I have a Hisense TV with a Chromecast with Google TV and no matter what source is selected I can ask Google to turn on or off my TV and it works. It's possible what you're experiencing is normal on Samsungs but I think there should be a setting to make it work.

Hey there,

I'd like to have your question answered first, I was just checking up on the thread since there was no activity! According to this article, CEC is necessary for the assistant to turn on and off your TV. So, if your HDMI 2 is the only HDMI that supports CEC, that would be the only port that the assistant can use to power the TV on and off.

Hi Jeran. I've already read that article which is why I knew about the CEC. The situation now is, for the most part operating my TV with my smart speaker is working. I can ask it to change between HDMIs and it will, and I can ask it to turn off the TV and it does however, if the TV is on either HDMI 1 or 3 when I ask it to turn off, it will not turn it back on again. It will only turn it on if the TV is on HDMI 2 (the one with the Chronecast plugged in) when it is turned off, but I suspect this is more to do with the way the Samsung TV works rather than the smart speaker. I think it is working about as well as it can.

You may be right that it could be the way that your Samsung TV works. It could be worth reaching out to Samsung support, as they may be aware of more configuration settings that may help out, either that or wait for future updates to both devices to see if it helps functionality.
