Official Chromecast Ethernet adapter only connects at 100Mbps

I have the Chromecast Ethernet adapter, purchased from Google, but when I connect the Chromecast using it and check the link speed at the switch, it only connects at 100Mbps. Connecting my laptop to the same cable and port connects at 1Gbps, so the problem appears to be the adapter itself. For HD content 100Mbps is fine, but it's not fast enough for streaming some UHD rips where the data rate exceeds 100Mbps - the playback stutters and momentarily stops every couple of seconds. For a device that's supposed to be able to play 4k content, this is inadequate.

You can buy an aftermarket high speed Ethernet adapter or a powered USB-C Hub with gigabit Ethernet port.

The tech specs for the Ethernet adapter says:

10/100 Mbps Ethernet port for hard-to-reach Wi-Fi spots in your home

As mentioned, if wi-fi doesn't work for you, there are 3rd party solutions. Truthfully, I find the Chromecast a little underwhelming in the performance space.

You should be happy to have a connection that is stable. If you use Ethernet and get a connection that is not jittery then tell us your secret to a better connection. I will be going back to the DLNA streaming device soon and getting rid of the system that is putting reports before the service you are seeking. Stop the data reporting and review your application and let us not drop the data all the time

I have no complaints about the stability or otherwise of the ethernet connection, other than that it won't play rips that exceed 100Mbps. Everything else I play on the Chromecast from either my DLNA server or through streaming services works fine.

Hey there NickJP,

Looking at Google's documentation when it comes to the Chromecast requirements, they specify that "For 4K content, you need a 4K-capable TV and a high-speed internet connection (at least 20 Mbps)" In most cases, that should be sufficient. I'm not sure if they expected a use case for the adapter to need more than 100Mbps when considering that metric. Aside from using a 3rd-party adapter like djtetei suggested, I'd recommend you submit feedback to Google to let them know that you have a need for higher speeds when it comes to the official Ethernet adapter.
