Uncompressed PCM and lossless FLAC are able to deliver high fidelity sound, without any hussle.

I wouldn't bother using MQA encoded files, because it requires proprietary decoding technology and the brand is not open and transparent about what they do to the sound.

Personally, I never felt the need to use MQA encoded files or MQA licensed products.

I have the first Gen Google dongle, and use Chrome browser on my Mac laptop (and iphone) to watch movies, youtube, and a lot of music.

I was wondering does anyone know the resolution of the AUDIO that "Cast" uses/is capable of from the browser app?

I know there are limits of the device streaming to, ie the Gen of the dongle, and device that it is attached to, but I was wondering what specs is the Casting function of the browser able to transmit?

Thank you!

You can stream 192 KHz / 24 bit audio stream, but the final output depends on the capability of the input / output interface.

So the "cast tab" option in, say, Youtube on Google Chrome browser, the cast program is able to send 24bit/192khz maximum data? I believe I understand that I would need material to be cast to be 24/192, and the receiving dongle/puck needs to also accept 24/192. I think the Google Chromecast Audio that I have does 24/96khz.....but I am not sure what my first gen Chromecast Dongle does?

You can certainly cast 192 KHz 24 bit audio content, but Chromecast with Google TV would deliver maximum 96 KHz 24 bit and only through USB interface.

YouTube is not a high resolution audio streaming service, because it will transcode the source material to a lossy format. As long as we are dealing with a lossy compression format we can't talk about high resolution audio.

On the other hand, if you are using a streaming service like Tidal, which can deliver lossless audio content up to 192 KHz 24 bit, the maximum sample rate delivered by the Chromecast Audio or Chromecast with Google TV will be 96 KHz 24 bit.

Thanks so much! I have the old first gen Chromecast Dongle, and the Chromecast Audio puck. I knew the Audio puck can receive 24/96, but didn't know what the other video based dongle would do audio wise. However, I am being gifted a Chromecast Ultra which looks that it will also receive/play 25/96k audio data.
I actually use Qobuz, which seems to recognize any streaming receiver, and they have multiple bit rate/resolution files but NOT "MQA" based files (so no decoding/unpacking). I was doing all of this to see what at least the receiving streaming devices resolution were, just to ensure I was at least streaming the best I can.

Thanks again for your time and knowledge.
