I haven't studied the manual for this particular model, but if what you say it's true, in my opinion, it is poor software implementation and, if not updated and rectified, it's not worth keeping.

Aspect ratio settings are a must on any modern TV, regardless of input resolution.

It seems that some people at Sony need their minds to be pushed from their buts to their heads.

Are you shure that the TV model does not have a [Picture & Display] → [Screen] menu available?

It is a Bravia model, after all, and it should have it.

Hello,

I have a Sony Bravia Oled XR-A83J. Google TV is implemented in the TV operating system together with Netflix. Almost all movies and series on Netflix are in 21:9 aspect ratio, resulting in a black border on the top and bottom of the board.

This is detrimental to Oled panels because organic LEDs do not age the same, the TV itself does not allow the possibility of expanding the image in its menu.

I wonder if I will be able to expand the image to fill the entire screen if I buy a Chromecast with Google TV 4K, plug it into a TV and watch Netflix through it?

Thanks for the help!

Ultrawide CinemaScope aspect ratio does not account for ILED or LCD technical problems because it is ment to be used in home theater projection screens.

However, if you can cope with some lose of lateral image content, you can use the TV aspect ratio settings to fill up the screen.

It seems that this is the way the Sony system is designed to work with streaming applications, in order to preserve the original source image quality.

If, however, you send the video signal from an external source, you may be able to adjust the aspect ratio.

Personally, I never use the zoom functionality on any of my TVs because I want to retain the original aspect ratio of the material. Eventually, those panel pixels my fail in time, but until that happens it may be time for a TV upgrade also.

If you have a dvd or Blu-ray player available, you can connect it to the HDMI input of the TV and verify which aspect ratio options are available on the TV. I suspect that the only options available over HDMI will be 16:9 and 4:3, without any zoom.

In my opinion, you worry too much about the burn-in issue.

If you like to enjoy movies alot, simply take a brake after one or two anamorphic movies and play something in standard 16:9 aspect ratio.

What dj said. Considering the vast majority of movies are done in wider aspect ratios than 16:9, if burn in were an issue, you would see widespread complaints about it on tech blogs, forums, reddit and so on. You're very much overthinking it. Just enjoy your TV. And if I'm not mistaken, the later generation OLED TV's have anti burn in tech built in to prevent it. And if you can't take off your tinfoil hat long enough to enjoy watching the wider aspect content, you can pony up for a micro LED tv and alleviate your issues while retaining the inky blacks and get the plus of a much brighter image so you can keep that gorgeous picture in a lit up room as well. 🙂

Hey,

Please excuse me for not answering you right away.

Buying a micro LED TV is out of the question because I have a Sony Bravia Oled XR-A83J for barely three months.

Not to offend you: the picture on OLED is still superior, although for my “problem” it would be more pragmatic to buy a micro LED TV.

I mostly watch sports and movies on TV, and very little about everything else.

On my OLED there is Google TV with Netflix, but on it I can't change the aspect ratio from for example 21: 9 to 16: 9 to avoid black edges even at the expense of a worse image.

I received official information from Sony that organic LEDs age unevenly in the black bands on the screen.

So I was thinking of buying a Google Chromecast with TV 4K that has Netflix integrated, just like my TV.

I was hoping someone on the forum knew if it was possible to change the aspect ratio on Netflix on Google Chromecast with TV 4K.

I’m asking someone on the forum who has Google Chromecast with TV 4K and watches movies on Netflix to see if they can change the aspect ratios on the movie?

Thank you and best regards!
Milan

Hey there crogs,

There is currently a large backlog of threads that need catching up on. The Nest Community Forum has a focus on the Community helping each other out, and I moderate and answer where I can, starting with the oldest threads first when it comes to support.

If you require help immediately, I would recommend getting into contact with Chromecast Support directly.

I appreciate your help on the threads!

Best regards,

Jeran
