I got a notice that my thermostat was adjusted to account for the availability of cleaner energy sources later.

However, I use gas for heating. How would a gas source be cleaner at a different time of day?

My notice:

Your thermostat was automatically adjusted to prioritize cleaner energy at 7:35PM PT on November 17, 2022. And in the process, you earned 1 Leaf.

Hi Mel,

I saw a good thread on this site (though I can't find it) where there may be a peak demand for gas(?) where it is worth delaying its use.

I don't know if you have definitive insight on this.

How does the Nest know I have gas heat?

As far as the wiring, I don't have a pic, I can tell you that the Nest is wired for heat only. I have another NEST unit for AC only.

Hi madrazoj,

During setup, the Nest Thermostat will ask you what source of power you have, and one of the options is Gas. To remove this, factory reset your Nest Thermostat, remove the Thermostat from the Home app, then set it up again.

Best,

Cool. Thanks

What is the rationale for delaying gas usage at certain times. I understand with electricity where power plants go on line to meet peak demands.

I have this same question. The program only shows electric utilities options for me in the profile set up, so it really appears that it’s adjusting my thermostat assuming electricity is being used for the furnace. Which it is not. It dropped my House temperature to 62 last night when it was -15 outside and it was truly awful to wake up to this morning and dangerously cold for my parrot. That’s colder than my Eco low temp setting, so I’m really concerned about this whole program’s value right now.
