HOW?Roku streaming device remote control connected to my TV.

I have a Roku streaming stick. I'm trying to download the Roku remote on my phone. It will not let me download a regular remote. All it does is show as on off volume up volume down. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Have you hook up the Roku to the TV? I believe I have that right now. How do I fix my remote on my phone for the Roku TV device? Please help. Thank you #
