You'll need a Google account regardless.
You can explore thermostat features and what makes them smart here.
One model is setup using the Home app (Nest Thermostat), all other models are setup in the Nest app.
You can install the thermostat yourself, or have a professional install it for you.

In addition, you can control the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E with the Google Home app after you migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account.
