Cannot connect to Synology NAS using Google Wifi

I was using a Synology NAS with my old Linksys router. I replaced the Linksys router with Google Wifi today, and it went flawlessly, except I cannot connect to the NAS.

I have the NAS wired directly to the ethernet port on the Google Wifi mesh router. I can see that the NAS has been assigned an IP address using the Home app on iOS. I cannot connect to the NAS through either a browser by directly entering the IP on a computer connected wirelessly to Google Wifi, nor can I connect using the NAS search/setup application on the same computer.

I am not trying to connect to the NAS from outside my LAN. Could someone please help me understand where I am going wrong? I've read other posts that say port forwarding is required, and I don't understand what 5000,5001, and 80 mean with respect to setting this up, if it is, in fact, needed. Thanks in advance!

I have a Synology DS620slim behind a Netgear GS108 switch behind my Nest Wifi router, and it works very well. So I don't think it's a problem with Google Wifi itself.

Port forwsrding is only for reaching stuff when coming from outside of your network, so that isn't needed/ relevant for reaching stuff inside your own network/ LAN.

I'd try to reset the network settings for the Synology NAS if I were you. Google Wifi most likely uses a different LAN address (192.168.86.x) than what you had earlier. See:

https://kb.synology.com/en-global/DSM/tutorial/How_to_reset_my_Synology_NAS_7#t1

If that does not help:

How have you connected everything? From the socket in your wall, all the way to your NAS (modem, cables, switches). I'd try with a unmanaged switch behind your Google Nest Wifi, plug both your NAS and a PC to it.

What DSM version are you running?

Have you created any firewall rules on the NAS, for instamce what IP addresses can be used when managing it?

Got it to work- it was an NAS firewall issue. For some reason, the NAS setup assistant program does not work when used with Google Wifi.

I got it to work yesterday by doing the following:

1) made a note of the Google Wifi Router IP address

2) hooked up the Google Wifi router ethernet port to the internet input of the old Linksys router

3) hooked up a desktop computer and the Synology Diskstation NAS to the ethernet ports on the back of the old Linksys router (I did this because the computer had been hard-wired to the old Linksys router, and all the cables were right there.)

4) In this configuration, I used the Synology NAS setup assistant program on the desktop to locate the NAS. (Of course, it was on a separate network created by the Linksys router, but at least I could see the NAS.) It seems during this step, the NAS setup program adds an exception to the NAS firewall for the router. I could not get to this step using the Google Wifi router, as I could see it but could not communicate with it.

5) All the error messages I had been getting indicated a firewall issue, so I logged into the NAS from a browser using the IP from the setup assistant and then used the NAS control panel app to find the NAS firewall.

6) I saw that the NAS firewall had an exception for the Linksys router, so I added an exception for the Google Wifi router's IP address.

6) Voila, problem solved. I can now use the NAS on the Google Wifi.

Thanks for your help.
