Setting up Google Wifi AC-1304

Yesterday I upgraded my internet to gigabit plan, and the tech. said i'd need to reboot my cable modem/router to see the new speed. I did that, but the speed test still giving me the old speed like i used to have (around 206.7 Mbps download). Not sure if I installed/setup right to begin with, so hopefully someone can help.

So my first node, cat6 cable connected from the modem to the wan port, and i use the other lan port connect directly to a pc (right next to it)

My second node, another cat6 go from LAN port to a 8-port gigabit switch, from there i connect to a ps4, my garage door assurelink, and a pc.

Speed test wired connection from pc gives me around 200 - 250 , connection test from PS4 gives around 100 - 130 . Are they supposed to be the same, not exactly to be the same, but at least close?

Everything work, question on the second node though ... because I connect a node to another switch, should I use the WAN port instead of LAN ? I tried them both, but not seeing any changes ... still have connection but speed are the same.

Is there a way to get to the speed i signed up for, I understand it will not be as high as advertised, but at least double what I currently have.

My cable modem is Netgear cm700, google wifi ac-1304, switch is NetGear Prosafe 8-port Gigabit switch GS108 if that helps,

This is likely related to the built in automatic QoS.

It should get better if you give it some time to adjust. You could also try to disable preferred activities:

If that makes no difference, try to factory reset your network and set it up from scratch. Use the same network name (SSID) and password and your devices will reconnect automagically.

I'm still having trouble with getting the speed up. I've tried what suggested but did not see improvement. My friends suggest that i may need to change my ethernet cable, so i'm waiting on that right now 🙂

beside the cables replacements, is there anything else you can recommend to try?

Thanks for the update, netfugitive.

Swapping out the ethernet cable might help. I would also look into olavrb's suggestion to disable preferred activities (he put the link to the steps above) if you haven't done that yet. If those don't change anything, let's try more steps before we pile too many things on at once.

I've tried to disable the preferred activity, and swapping cables. Both didn't help. Not sure what else needs to be done.

Someone suggested me to change DNS on the modem to use 8.8.8.8 . I haven't had a chance to do that yet because wife work and kids doing school work. Will that change anything?

Using the updated DNS settings can help out with several issues, yes. It's definitely a good thing to give a try and see if it impacts how your traffic works. If nothing changes, just let us know here and we can look at more options.

I've tried everything but not much change. Actually it changed for a few days, download speed was higher but then go back down to what I used to have before.nim not sure what else to do now 🙂

What's the make and model of your modem / router?
Have you tried doing a speed test directly from your cable modem / router?
What's the speed test result directly from the Google Home app?

Netgear cm700, google wifi ac-1304, switch is NetGear Prosafe 8-port Gigabit switch GS108
92.0 Mbps download, 37.2 Mbps upload right now, tested using wired connection from the main puck to the pc. I haven't had the chance to do the direct test yet, but it was something around 240mbps download.
test from google home app.: 735 down, and 20 up (pressing the "Run speed test" link within the google home app.)

forgive my ignorance, my wired test is under 100, but wifi test is 735 ... is wired supposed to be faster than wifi? 🙂

Thanks for the added information. The wired connection is supposed to be faster than Wi-Fi since it's connected directly. To isolate the issue further, please try the steps below:

Open the Google Home app .
Tap Wi-Fi Settings Advanced Networking.
Tap DNS.
Select Custom and enter “8.8.8.8” and “8.8.4.4”.

before dns change:

wired: 92.1 down / 41.8 up
wifi: 212.0 down / 38.6 up

after dns change:

wired: 92 down / 33 up
wifi: 740 down / 39 up

it's strange that my wired connection is always slower than wifi 🙂

Thanks for the added information. Just to clarify, what device are you testing for wired connection? Is it connected to the LAN port of the parent Google Wi-Fi point? If so, could you try connecting it directly to your cable router / modem?

Yes, it's connected to the lan port of the main Google wifi. As soon as I'm back home I'll direct connect to the modem.

wire connected directly to modem: 419.37
wire connected to the main google wifi is now 632.19
i had to shut down everything and it's back up. speed test from google home app: 724
my google home wifi -on my phone- is now showing internet not connected on the app, even though my phone is connected to wifi. i'm not able to do a speed test within the google home app., but able to do google speed test: 169.2
