How to set up smart device using iphone and google wifi

How do I set up smart devices when the following are true:

1: Google combines 2.4 and 5 ghz wifi into a single network name (and doesn't appear to let you distinguish between the two).

2: You need to be on 2.4 ghz to set up most smart devices.

3: iOS does not let you select which band to connect to.

Is there any way to set up smart devices using google wifi and an iPhone? This feels like a major oversight.

It is an oversight...on behalf of the 'smart' device manufacturer! They should have built their app smart enough to figure this out.

BUT..given Google chose to combine the frequencies to keep things simple, you're stuck...you could try connecting up an old router temporarily, one that allows you to broadcast only on 2.4ghz....give it the same Wifi name/password as your Google wifi, so when you switch back the device will connect up ok.

Another choice would be to find an area far enough away from your wifi signal so that only 2.4ghz is being received in that area, set the device up there...but it's very hit and miss.
