Can I use one or both of the Ethernet ports as regular Ethernet ports? I understand that one is reserved for the modem connection, but what about the ports on the other two WiFi units in my mesh system?

Hello @dbjennings

Yes – on the primary Google WiFi unit, the WAN port must be used to connect to the internet/modem, but the LAN port on the primary can be used to connect wired equipment, including one or more inexpensive unmanaged Ethernet switches to make more ports available. I have built a wired network with 5 Ethernet switches throughout my home that is rooted in the primary Google WiFi unit's LAN port.

For the secondary Google WiFi units, you can use both Ethernet ports for nearby wired devices, and this is recommended to improve performance. You can even connect an unmanaged Ethernet switch to connect more than two devices to a secondary if you need to.

Thank you MichaelP! That is exactly what I needed. (Why can't I find that in a startup guide or user manual?)

It can be hard to find more details like this sometimes. Here's a help page you can take a look at to dig a little deeper: https://support.google.com/wifi/answer/7215624?hl=en
