Hi Community,

We have a Google Mesh WiFi system (marshmallows) with one router and four points. Our house is about 1800 square feet, but very, very old. We started with one router and two points but had problems with weak signals. We now go from great connection on a mesh test to weak and then back again.

To trouble shoot the problem we have restarted and factory reset the entire system. It does not matter where in the house the points are including right next to the router when the mesh test reads weak. The speed test always reads above 180 mbps and says blazing fast.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Hi, kimday12.

Sorry for the issues you're having with your mesh setup. That sounds like a really frustrating experience. Let's work out the issue and get things working fully for you.

You mentioned that your house was about 1800 square feet. In that sort of space, you might actually be using too many WiFi points. Adding more points than you need to properly cover your space can actually cause devices to jump between points, create a bit of interference, or other issues.

What I would try is to set up your initial router, and put one point within two rooms of that main point. From there, run a mesh test and see how your devices perform around the home. If you have any slow areas, introduce one more point and repeat the test process.

I know you mentioned that you had two points before and it had issues, but go ahead and run through this to see if things are better with different placements. Generally having four points is recommended for a home in the 4,500-6,000 sq. ft. range. If you're still having issues, however, please let me know and we can look at other possible causes and solutions.

Thanks.
