Wifi Speed issues

Hi

I know this issue has been raised several times. But i couldn't find a solution that worked for me.

I own the Google mesh WiFi for several years. I had a 200mbps ethernet and noticed that I cant get my wifi to get more that 100mbps. it is mostly around 60mbps. I thought that was normal for wifi to be slower than the ethernet so I left it as is. Now I have upgraded my ethernet to 1000mbps and still getting the same disappointing results. it never goes over 100mbps usually at around 60. to be clear the connection betwen the units seems OK and I'm getting consistent results in the remote units and in the ine directly connected to the router. The router (the internet supplier router not the google) by the way emits wifi at close to 1000mbps but only for a short distance.

To recap, I'm getting slow internet even from the main google unit connected directly to the ethernet.

I have already chaged several cables and now using brand new CAT7 cables.

I tried moving the unit away from the routers wifi by hard wire connecting it in the distant location.

I have reset the unit and established a new network. Nothing seems to help.

With the Home app speed test I'm getting the following readings:

Download - at the ethernet speed usually over 500mbps

Upload - always below 100mbps

But the wifi readings are always below 100mbps.
Any suggestion not yet tried?
Thank you
Guy

Are the wifi points hard wired or are they connected via wifi only? Wifi only you may loose about half bandwidth to the backhaul function, that's why when possible hard wired is the way to go. Also I've notice that Google wifi systems throttle speeds. Do a speed test with your phone or tablet. Do one test as is, then go into the GH app and set the phone or tablet as a priority device and redo the speed test - do you get the same numbers or are they better?

Thank you for responding. I did not hard wire the other units as the issue is the same with the main unit that is hard wired to the ISP router. I get similar results in the remote units as the connection is good. Prioritizing my iPhone did not make difference.

I've been experiencing the same for the past year and a half. I have replaced all the cables in my home and have tried repositioning the routers and access points multiple times. I have verified that my gig connection to the home is rock solid and I still cannot get speeds faster that 360mbps when I'm upstairs, right next to a router, downstairs I get roughly 100 mbps to 150 mbps. I have 2 routers hardwired and 3 access points for a 2500 sq ft home, 2 story home. They really only perform ok when they are very close to each other and in a line of sight configuration. Even then, I have never seen speeds higher than 360 mbps with these routers. I went back and forth with a switch in the setup and even changed switches a few times. I've come to the conclusion that this is happening because, for lack of a better term, the google router is stuck broadcasting in 2.4 ghz and I'm pretty much screwed because we are not allowed to login and change that. I recommend going with another router setup entirely. My single ASUS router performed beautifully for years before giving up the ghost. Im going to try either another ASUS or a Netgear mesh setup so I can force a 5ghz connection, these google routers are junk and the support is non existent. What a waste of $$$.

Hi GuySapir,

Sorry about the speed issues you're having. I know that's a frustrating issue to deal with on your home network. I'll be happy to look at this with you. Thanks for the info you've already provided. I have something for you to check real fast and then we can pick up troubleshooting steps from there. In your advanced network settings, do you have IPv6 enabled? If so, can you disable that and see what impact it has on your speeds? Let me know what you find out there and we'll continue based on what we find.

Thanks,

Hello,

I’ve actually tried this on a number of occasions. Nothing seems to work. The only thing that seems to improve performance is putting all of the points near the router. Way to close for it to make any sense. Also, when I do this I might see consistent speeds around 350-450 mbps, and that’s on a gig service plan. However, when I do this, any other place other than my kitchen and living room get speeds that are just pathetic. I’ve just given up on hoping Google made something worth all the money I threw away on this system.

I did that, no changes. I also experimented with turning off my WiFi from my phone and turning it on right next to the router. I immediately get connected to the 5ghz network and as soon as I walk away, it reverts back to 2.4ghz and I am back to less than 80mbps. Keep in mind, I did this will two routers, and 3 access points all within 25ft of each other. I have an iPhone and a MacBook Pro. My MacBook consistently stays on 5ghz but none of the iPhones in my home do. Maybe it’s just a Google/ Apple thing and I’ll never see faster speeds with this system.

Hey folks,

Give these steps a try:

Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.

Remove any special characters in your network name and password.

Set a custom DNS at 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.

Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.

If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

Let us know how it goes.

Performance is better overall but I’m still disappointed with the speeds. Im probably going to lower my internet plan to 400 mbps since that’s all I get with a 1gb connection to the router anyway. Signal strength and stability are great though.
