Hey!
I recently received a Google Nest unit from my internet provider, but when I told them I'd need a Point router as well, they sent me another Nest.

Can I use this second nest as a Point router, or do I have to get a different product?

I don't want to unpack the second one if I can't use it anyway.

Yes, Nest Wifi routers can be used as points as well. This should bring better performance too. I've used two Nest Wifi routers in wireless mesh for multiple years now. 🙂

I am a new nest user with two Nest routers.

The 1st Nest router is connected to my T-mobile modem via ethernet and is working well as a new wireless network. To clarify, I now have the original wireless network (I am going to refer to this one TM_wifi) from the T-mobile modem and the new one (I am going to refer to this one as N1_wifi) created by the Nest router. Both work well, although N1_wifi speed tests are consistently slower than TM_wifi speed tests.

The devices are within a few feet of each other because I cannot run a long ethernet cable to the new location and the modem is where it gets the best cellular signal.

So I purchased a second Nest router to create a mesh to the home office which is at the other end of our small house. I can get a satisfactory wifi signal in the home office for my iMac from TM_wifi in this room most of the time, but not as strong as I would like. That is why I got the 2 Nest routers in the first place-it would be a major project to run ethernet to this location.

I have been unable to configure the 2nd Nest router as a point which I can move to the home office. It always fails to connect to the internet. I have restarted all the devices, reset both of the nests to factory and started over with the same result.

How do I configure the 2nd Nest router to be a point in the mesh?

It should be as easy as adding a Nest Wifi add-on point.

Make sure you're inside the Google Home home where your existing network is.

If you use iOS:

Make sure you have no VPN enabled/ connected; not any 3rd party product, nor the "Apple iCloud Private Relay" ( https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212614 ).

Make sure the Google Home app has been granted permission for "local network access" ( https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/7172427?hl=en ).

Other workarounds to try:

IPv6 on Nest Wifi has caused strange problems lately. One thing to try is to disable IPv6 ( https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6361450?hl=en ), add new Nest Wifi unit, then leave IPv6 off or enable it again.

Use an ethernet cable between the main/ master/ primary LAN port to the new point WAN port during setup, move it after setup is complete.

Use a different device (iOS, iPadOS, Android) running the Google Home app during setup of the new device.
