What causes a device to be grayed out?

I am trying to set up a Family Wi-Fi group to capture every device that connects to our Nest Wi-Fi.

The problem is that a number of devices, even those that have recently connected are grayed out.

What causes this? How do I capture those devices?

For example, at this moment, a computer that my child used yesterday is greyed out and I want to add it to the group that has SafeSearch enabled via Nest Wi-Fi; however, it is impossible to click the checkbox to add a greyed out device to add it to the group.

So, I turned the device on and connected it to the Nest Wi-Fi, waited 10 minutes, and it was still grayed out.

So, again my question, what is the logic or rules that apply to grey out a device?

Thanks for posting, and sorry for the delay ― let's see what's going on.

To confirm, are there other devices that are connected to your network but is grayed out on the app?

Give these steps a try:

Open your Google Home app.
Tap Wifi icon.
Tap the settings/gear icon on the upper right.
Go to Privacy.
Toggle Nest Wifi Cloud Services off for 10 seconds and then back on.
Unplug your Google Nest Wifi devices from the power for 2 minutes.
