Please tell me if my new setup is feasible.

Hi guys,

I am in the process of upgrading my networking gear for home. I already purchased multiple nest wifi routers, which will be used throughout dead zones. I've had my electrician wire ethernet everywhere so each nest router will be hardwired.

Please note I will be enabling bridge mode on the nest wifi routers in order to avoid double NAT. My proposed setup is as follows.

Fiber ONT -> Unifi UDM Pro -> Switch -> Multiple Nest Wifi Devices (bridge mode).

Researching on the community indicates that I need to have a setup like below -

Fiber ONT -> Unifi UDM Pro -> Nest Wifi (Bridge mode) -> Switch -> Multiple Nest Wifi Devices.

Can anyone with expertise please chime in on the validity of my proposal? I have already tested #1 and the Google Home app was having difficulty establishing a second nest router. Error message was along the lines of "Could not connect to mesh network". I saw someone's comment that the only way to get past the message is to setup each router using a separate gmail account and that seemed to have worked but I would like to see all of my nest setup via one account.

(For those wondering, the reason why I want my ONT to connect to Unifi router is because I have gotten a much reliable (and faster) result when Unifi distributed internet first.)

All Nest Wifis must be in bridge mode. One Google Home home can only have one Nest Wifi puck in bridge mode, so you'll need one Google Home home per device.

Also, features like roaming/ seamless handover will not work when all pucks are in bridge mode, as all Nest Wifi pucks will be "dumb" access points only.

Correct topology will be modem -> UDM -> Switch -> Nest Wifi pucks in bridge mode.

Why don't you sell the Nest Wifi pucks and buy some dedicated access points instead? 🙂

Could you elaborate more on the "dumb" access point part? What makes it so dumb that the transition will be difficult?

I would upgrade, but I still have not seen a perfect product that offers everything I want (Wifi 6E, POE, non wall mounted). I have looked into unifi's however their offerings are still strapped with old wifi tech. If you have any recommendation, please let me know 😉

Dumb as in separate, they don't know of each others existence, and don't cooperate.

I'm actually kind of in the same boat. Don't want wall or ceiling mounted access points, so I'm "stuck" with Nest Wifi for now.

Ubiquiti UniFi Mesh 6 looks OK.

Netgear has a halfway decent one, WAX206.

Sorry, I somehow did not get pinged for your reply.

So I am guessing you also have multiple nest wifi routers and holding off for 6E access points? I think we are about a year out before 6e gears become more mainstream.

Yep, 2x Nest Wifi routers in wireless mesh. Works well enough, but would like more advanced capabilities, like DNS sinkhole, VLAN tagging, client isolation on guest and IoT network.
