Hello!

So where I live the only internet we are allowed to get is Centurystink and they won't come install for 3 months because they are backed up. In the meantime we have purchased a hotspot from Verizon which has been working great as Wifi, but we wanted to extend it through out the house. Am I able to set up either the Google Dots or the Google Nest with the wifi from the hotspot but without using an ethernet cable? The hotspot device doesn't allow anything to connect to it via either net cable so it would have to be wifi set up only.

Thanks for any help!

Hello @ashleyesmith113

Google/Nest WiFi requires an Ethernet connection from the primary unit to your internet service. I know some people have done similar things in the past, but it is complicated and requires setting up something like a travel router that can be a WiFi client for your hot spot and provide the Ethernet connection Google/Nest WiFi needs. This would require purchasing another piece of hardware you'll be using for a few months, and getting it configured properly may be... tedious.

I don't think I can provide detailed instructions, but from a quick search, it looks like something like this: https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL-AR300M16-Ext-Pre-Installed-Performance-Programmable/dp/B07794JRC5/ configured in "repeater" mode would act like a WiFi client for your Verizon hot spot and provide an Ethernet connection either a Google WiFi or Nest WiFi Router needs to create a larger WiFi network. If you do this, try to spread all of the WiFi devices apart a bit – at least three feet between any of the radios (the hot spot, the travel router, and the Google/Nest WiFi unit). I would not do this as a permanent/long-term solution, though.
