Wi-Fi download speed test are slow; Guest Wi-Fi is fast

I have 500mbps internet coming into my home. I’ve been using the Google nest Wi-Fi with one access point for over a year. I have a main SSID and a guest. All 29 devices in my house have always been connected to the main. All of a sudden download speed tests have gone to under 100mbps. The guest Wi-Fi has speed tests where they should be, well over 400mbps. Nothing has been changed.

I have removed devices from the main and connected them to the guest. Guest speed is still fast at over 400mbps. But even with no devices on the main, download tests are still under 100mbps. There are no unknown devices or any neighbors connected.

Why has the main Wi-Fi become slower? Any ideas? Thanks.

Hey Roosterdude,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

I have tried everything you have suggested but still the same slower speed tests in the main Wi-Fi ssid. Guest Wi-Fi is still faster, as it should be. Thanks.
