Google wifi slow until I run mesh test

I've had the google wifi with 4 stations running for a couple years now. I had no problems for the first year, but in this last year the wifi keeps slowing down.. to like 3MB from the usual 100+ at our phones or laptops.

The strange thing is that if I go into Google Home app on iphone and run the speed tests, this almost always 'fixes' it. The speeds come back to normal.

Any ideas what's going on and how I can prevent it?

I'm having the same problem. Tried a new ethernet cable between the modem and google wifi. If I connect directly to my modem wifi, the speed is as it should be, it's only an issue when I'm on the Google wifi - tested all the placements and wifi signal too which is all full and working as it should be.

Hey folks,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

Are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.
Remove any special characters in your network name and password.
Turn off IPv6.
Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.
Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.

I'm using google fiber, so no separate modem. IPV6 is already set off. The DNS server is set to automatic, which should be google's servers since this is google fiber. There are no special characters in the nw name or pw. The endpoints are spread throughout the house (4 endponts for a 2 story 2500sq ft house), but all show as 'good' connection most of the time.

I've tried unplugging and plugging back in. That solves the issue for a few days but it returns.

I will try a factory reset the next time we aren't using the nw, but that's a big pain.

Any ideas why running the speed tests in the Google Home app fix the problem? That makes no sense to me.
