Google Wifi - Wired Access Points slow? ATT Fiber - modem

Hi! I'm sure this has been covered before but I'm having trouble finding any solutions.

I've hardwired my google wifi pucks: ATT modem --> google point router --> google puck access point --> google puck access point.

is there a limit to the number of wired pucks that can be added to the system? I saw 5 but didn't know if that was wifi or hardwired or both.

google home app shows 800mbps, but I'm only getting 200-400mbps, and the range is now not long enough to reach one of the google nest cameras outside.

I've turned off wifi on the att modem, enabled ip passthrough, and put the Mac address of the google router point in the dhcp-fixed address on att modem. my house is about 1800 sqft, pucks mounted on the ceiling about 30 to 40 feet away from each other.

Three pucks at 1800 sqft is overkill. Two placed on either side of the house should give you plenty of coverage. More is not always better with nesh, I cover 5 acers with 6 points (not Google). As far as speed, there seems to be throttling with the Google system, plenty of complaints on this community about it.

Thanks for the reply! Without the 3 I can’t get full coverage on my property inside and outside . Maybe it’s the lead paint, it’s a 1940’s house 🤣

Also, if the pucks are hardwired is it still considered a mesh? I just want to make sure I’m understanding the terminology correctly so I make sure I’m searching for the right info lol

It depends on the system. My Unifi system is a mesh no matter how make points I back haul, as it has a seperate controller that does all the backend meshing. Some systems only allow one point to be plugged in and then the next ones are just access points no mesh.

Sooooooo the system is the google wifi pucks. Would it be better if I had a switch after the puck router, then to the access points? Or the same?

Yes, the switch should be on the output of the Google router.

but will that resolve data speed issues? is there anything I can change on the modem that will help the data speeds?

Maybe but I'm doubtful. The easy way to check is unplug the two pucks and see what you get through the main.

Hey folks,

@dukeone75, thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

We recommend a maximum of 5 Wifi devices in a single network, both for hardwired and wireless Wifi points. Adding more might be detrimental to Wi-Fi performance. You can check this article to know how many Wifi points you need based on the square footage of your home.

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.

Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart. This helpful article talks more about Wifi devices placement.

Remove any special characters in your network name and password.

Turn off IPv6.

Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.

Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.

If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network.
