Can I use a longer ethernet cable between the router & google wifi - say 8 or 12 ft ?

Yes, you can use any good-quality Cat 5e or better cable between your modem and the primary Google WiFi unit. It could theoretically be 100 meters long if needed, but 8, 12, 20, or 50 feet should be fine.
