ASUS cx5601 Not Connecting to Nest Wifi Pro 6E

ASUS cx5601 Not Connecting to Nest Wifi Pro 6E. This Chromebook states it supports 6E however does not connect to Nest Wifi Pro 6E. Any thoughts as to why?

Just got the laptop a couple days ago and have power cycled and confirmed everything is updated.

Can you provide some more detail? Will it connect to other networks and not the new Nest Wifi Pro? Was it connected to another network previously with the same SSID?

Good Morning,

It connects to the 5ghz band on the Nest WiFi Pro just not the 6ghz band.

I do not have a second 6e WiFi source to try on a different router.

I would also mention that my Pixel 6a is able to connect to the 6ghz band on the Nest Wifi Pro with no problem.

Just a quick note that, from reading the fine print, not all models of that laptop actually support 6GHz / WiFi 6E. It says "up to" in the large print, and in the fine print, says "WiFi 6E network card is available on selected models." (note 5 at the bottom of https://www.asus.com/us/laptops/for-home/chromebook/asus-chromebook-flip-cx5-cx5601-12th-gen-intel/ ). So, I would dig a little deeper into whether the model you purchased does actually support WiFi 6E or if that was an option that came with a higher-end model.

If you're sure it does include that feature, but still won't connect, one issue I have seen is around WPA2 vs WPA3. Enabling WPA3 is an option for Nest WiFi Pro, but if it is not enabled, it will still be on for the 6GHz band, since that is required for WiFi 6E. The resulting "mixed" WPA versions can result in some devices having trouble, since they may not be prepared to switch between WPA versions within a single system. You might try enabling WPA3, and then delete your network from the laptop, then set it up again so it can connect using WPA3 only across all three bands.

cx5601fba-i3128 is the full model number. States it has 6E. How can I check what network card is on my device?

It's really hard to tell from that model number what WiFi adapter is included. It looks like that model comes with a Core i3 processor, though, which may be a clue that it is less likely to include the higher-spec WiFi. Most of the sites offering that exact model don't include a WiFi spec in their details. The closest I could find was Amazon, which just said "802.11ax" (which is WiFi 6, not WiFi 6E, so dual-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz). I don't use ChromeOS, so I'm afraid I can't provide details on how to tell which exact card is in your device.

Hey @RL3 .

To find the exact wireless adapter you have, follow the below:

In an new tab, type chrome://system
Scroll down the list to lspci and expand it
Look for "Network controller" in the list; it will show the model of the adapter
Search for the adapter online and you should be able to find the specs

I'm inclined to agree that the build you purchased may not have 6E capabilities.

So I was not able to determine the specifications of the network controller >> Intel Corporation Alder Lake-P PCH CNVi WiFi.

Maybe I should rephrase my question, whether it is 6 or 6E it should connect to the 6ghz band on my router and it is only connecting to the 5ghz per the Google Home app. 5745 I believe is the specific frequency.

Any thoughts on this?

There's actually a big difference between WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E. WiFi 6 is a new version of WiFi standards for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. WiFi 6E is a subset of those same features running in the 6GHz band.

We can close this out for now, no good way to determine whats going. Have not heard of different wifi cards in the same model very misleading if so.

Heads up that I was just able to connect to the 6ghz channel with my device. Appears that the wifi card is an AX211 which does support 6E.

Hey @RL3 .

I was just about to send a reply when you sent the last message; glad you got it resolved. The "chrome://system" interface I listed is a good place to know in case you need detailed information about your Chromebook in the future.

As far as different cards being in the same model, it is quite common with Chromebooks, Windows devices, and Macs. The different configurations allow for more options and upsells. Asus's top end of the CX5601 has an i7, 12th Gen and better hardware than the lower priced ones. Dealers like Best Buy usually carry the lower priced models of Chromebooks so you can sometimes get less than what you saw on the manufacturer's site. Luckily it worked out for you.

And to answer your question, Wifi 6 does not have the 6GHz band. That was part of the 6E standard that extended (what the "E" stands for) the Wifi 6 standard. The biggest differences are less latency, faster speeds, less interference and shorter ranges.

I can't say what happened to delay the CX5601 from connecting previously to the 6GHz band. In general, a device will connect to the strongest, least crowded, and fastest band so there are a lot of factors that could have been at play. Personally, I wouldn't get too hung up on the Wifi 6 vs. 6E. Over Wifi 5, I would recommend 6 or 6E due to increased security with WPA3 but unless you have a lot of congestion in or around your home with a lot of 6GHz capable devices, you are not going to see much if any difference in 6 vs. 6E. Most routers, including the Google/Nest lines, do a great job of managing the channels and connections that you typically always will get great performance.
