I have a Google Home hub (model = H2D w/ software = 14150.376.32) and two Google Home nodes (model = H2E w/ software = 1.56.315675). The iPhone app correctly shows 1Gbps coming in from city fiber. But the wi-fi bandwidth is 100Mbps or lower.

I have done a full factory reset of the hub and nodes, and I have redone the setup using the iPhone app.

Nothing has changed. Firmware won't update. Wi-fi bandwidth is still well below what it should be.

How do I force the firmware to update? The automatic process that is supposed to happen is obviously not happening.

I'm not hopeful. All of the other threads I read while trying to solve this went unresolved. And some of those threads were from 2021 and 2022. No obvious way to force a firmware update, and no obvious way to debug the problem. Just lots of the usual reboot and factory reset advice that goes nowhere.

Hey folks,

Thanks for posting — let's see what's going on.

A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? How many devices are dropping from the network? Also, do you have any paused devices?

Give these steps a try:

If you're using a modem/router combo, set that to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.

Make sure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and the points are no more than two rooms apart.

Remove any special characters in your network name and password.

Turn off IPv6.

Change your DNS server into 8.8.8.8 on the primary and 8.8.4.4 on the secondary server. Hit the save/ floppy disk icon on the upper right.

Unplug the power from your Google Wifi devices for 2 minutes.

If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will delete all network data.

You can skip any step if you’ve done them already.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,
Abi

Abi, can we please start with something simpler? 🙂 Are the firmware versions that I listed above the latest versions for both the hub and the node?

Paul

Hello GreyKestrel,

Thanks for the reply. Your Nest Wifi devices already have the latest firmware versions. It will automatically receive over-the-air updates about any software and hardware-related fix or firmware updates as long as it's constantly powered on and connected to the Wi-Fi network. So far, we don’t have news of any upcoming versions. Let us know if you’ve tried the steps I’ve mentioned in my previous post.

Regards,
Abi

Abi, thanks for the help. Everything is working fine. I actually did nothing (beyond what I had already done prior to opening this thread). But the last few days of speed tests show just under 500Mbps. Who the heck knows what caused the temporary degradation.
