I am looking into replacing my Onhub, I have two additional first generation hotspots.

First I need to know if the google hotspots will still be compatible? Second, what router should I use in the onhubs place? I have a lot of ring cams on my property as well as things in the house controlled by google home, so I need to be able to change my network and have them work as well. Please advise.

Hey @jfrench1969 .

Since the Nest Wifi Pro uses Wifi 6E, it is not backwards compatible with older devices so the additional points will not work with the Nest Wifi Pro: Replace existing Nest Wifi or Google Wifi with Nest Wifi Pro ; you'd have to replace them at the same time as the OnHub if you move to the Nest Wifi Pro. You can reuse the points with Google Wifi (Gen 1) and the Nest Wifi devices though.

In regards to the devices reconnecting after replacement, you only need to set the same SSID and password for the network on the new device during setup. You will have to set back up any device custom names, rules, guest network, or any other custom settings since you cannot import them between devices.

It is important to note however that Google ended support for OnHub routers earlier this year so although they will still send out a wifi signal, the advanced management features will not work. In addition, Google Wifi and Nest Wifi are compatible with each other, Nest Wifi Pro on the other hand is not compatible with any other wifi system.

Hey @jfrench1969 .

Ring devices, like nearly all IOT devices, use the 2.4GHz band because of its range so replacing the OnHub with anything newer means they will still work since 2.4GHz is the low band on all routers. The Google Wifi (Gen 1) and Nest Wifi support the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands but the Nest Wifi Pro adds in the 6GHz band and 160MHz channel.

As far as a replacement, I'd recommend the Nest Wifi Pro personally but the Nest Wifi would be a better cost alternative for your situation though since you can reuse the existing points you have. Unless you have any 6GHz capable devices and/or are willing to spend a few hundred dollars, the Nest Wifi Pro with 6E is not going to give you any additional advantage. I personally have the Nest Wifi Pro mesh that I upgraded to from the Google Wifi (Gen 1) mesh but I already had 6GHz capable devices. This article explains explains things in more detail: How Nest Wifi and Google Wifi 2.4, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands work

These articles will assist you with getting started if you go with the Nest Wifi as suggested:

Factory reset your Wifi device

Use Nest Wifi and Google Wifi devices on the same network
