My internet connection is good

My Fios router wifi speed is good

The wired google wifi AP says it has good bandwidth

All of my remote 4 google wifi APs have a weak connection

I've moved one to the same room as the wired AP - no improvement

I've factory reset the AP in the same room - no improvement

I've scanned all the wifi in the area and my APs are far louder than anything from my neighbors.

Before I factory reset all devices (and lose all my reserved IPs, port forwarding, and basically every other config) I'm hoping someone here has an explanation and/or fix.

Thanks

I have the same issue. Have factory reset and reinstalled everything with no improvement. Tested by adding one puck at a time reasonably spaced from the Google router and still only receives a week signal. I'm running three different Google mesh systems at three different locations two out of three have good to excellent connectivity. Is it possible the router is trying to force 5 gig communication which results in a weak signal because of obstruction? I have literally tried everything with no success. Is it possible the Google router has a problematic radio?

Hello @cwhogan123

It can be really hard to diagnose what may be causing something like this. But, my first thought is interference. You've checked for other WiFi systems in the area, but the spectrum used for 5GHz WiFi is unlicensed and the rules allow for using it in other ways and by other devices. In particular, things like sound bars that support wireless subwoofers and/or wireless surround speakers often use a part of the 5GHz band that is also used by Google/Nest WiFi. Worse yet, while multiple WiFi systems can share spectrum "nicely" (no impact to signal quality, but they will be sharing the capacity by taking turns), the way wireless sound bars (and things like some wireless gaming headsets) transmit audio (continuous transmission) is very different from WiFi, and the result is interference.

If your primary Google/Nest WiFi unit (the one connected to your internet service via Ethernet) is near something like a sound bar, you might try moving it further away – 10 to 15 feet would be a start, but the further the better.

If you don't have a wireless sound bar or something like a wireless gaming headset transmitter nearby, then I wouldn't rule out interference, but it seems less likely. In that case, I'd probably do a factory reset of the system and use one of the secondary units as the primary when setting it up again.

Another option is to dump this and use a different system that can create a mesh that works. Even this chat app is broken. No surprise massive layoffs are in order. The signal of 3 neighbors wifi are stronger than the Google wifi pro inside my house. Neighbors are 40 to 100ft away, running reliable mesh networks which are not Google wifi pro. It's a shame that the points can not be 12 ft away from each other. With a single wood floor in between. No ducts or anything. The area coverage Google claims is a typo, to say the least. My 8+y-o Asus router could create a better and larger mesh network.

- UPDATE -

I removed my 4 remote APs and restarted the remaining hardwired one. Bandwidth tests through this one device was back to normal (70+mbps). I added all 4 APs back, ran the mesh test and all reported "excellent" signal. Bandwidth tests on phones and PCs are getting 70+mbps.

Fortunately I didn't have to reset the hardwired AP and didn't lose my network settings. I can't be certain if resetting all the remote APs was the solution or if some external interference was removed between steps, but it appears to be working properly again, as is has for the last several years.
