Problems after upgrading to Fiber service

I've recently upgraded to my local cable company's fiber service. For the first couple of days after the change, I was speed testing in the 600mbps range. Since then I've been consistently in the 85-95mbps range (download and upload). I had the cable guy here yesterday to check their modem. Tested over 600. When I hard wire my desktop directly to the modem, I see the same. When I hard wire to the Wifi hub, I drop back to the slow range noted. I did a factory reset to "start from scratch". Still no improvement.

Is there an issue with my mesh? Is there some setting that needs attention to return my speed? Any help would be appreciated!

Same issue for me, tried so many different fixes and none of them are permanent and only last a few hours at most.

Hey @Cboe .

How is your network set up and who is the ISP? The issue is likely the setup itself with the ISP's device(s) causing a Double NAT with your Google Wifi. This is common with fiber installations but can be fixed in most cases. Unfortunately, most ISP techs don't know enough about networking to know how to set them up properly in cases like yours.

Also of note, are you getting the correct speeds? Fiber networks typically start at 1Gbps or higher since coaxial can handle up to 1Gbps without issue (which I have) so you will not get any significant advantages switching to fiber for 600Mbps speeds.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I’m not an IT professional so I can’t answer your questions. Can you guide me on the proper setup you referenced. What are the settings that I should share with my ISP to prevent the “double NAT” that you mentioned? Also, what is a double NAT?

Hey @Cboe .

This article explains Double NAT in detail: Fix Double NAT when two routers run at the same time . Essentially, when two routers are connected they both try to manage the traffic routing and conflict with each other.

The proper setup should be ONT > Google Wifi > Points. This removes the ISP's (Internet Service Provider, i.e. who you get your service from) router from the network, eliminates Double NAT, and allows one router to manage the network. There are more caveats if you have phone and/or TV to consider as well.

It is hard to say what settings you need to change on the ISP side without knowing the provider at least. I have successfully helped Verizon Fios customers eliminate their fiber router/modem; I've linked a recent thread explaining it below. The instructions are fairly straight forward and you should be able to complete them if you are comfortable doing basic configurations. The settings on the ISP gear that need to be made may vary if a different ISP than Verizon but the ISP should be able to help if you cannot make the changes noted in Step #4. The instructions note using a switch in Step #6 but that can be skipped if you are not using one.

I am still having the same issues and I am not experiencing a double NAT issue.

Current setup is Modem->Google Puck(Router)->Switch->Two other Google pucks

When I run a network performance test, I see the full speed out of the router (1Gbps), but when connected to either puck, I get degraded performance (90Mbps).

I am highly considering ditching Google Wifi at this point, hoping you can provide more help.

I did make the recommended change and there is no change. Speed test is still returning. 85-90mbps download/upload
