Port Forwarding

Would welcome any advice on this matter as I am really struggling with it... I want to forward to port 22 on a internal machine on my network.

The internal machine has it's own IP and I have confirmed that the external port 22 is open and not blocked by ISP/Firewall. I have a static IP. All IPv4.

When I go through the settings and add external port 22 / internal port 22 I get the following error message.

'Failed to add new rule. Please check your input and try again.'

The same message with TCP, UDP and TCP/UDP.

The machine to forward to is running Ubuntu 20.04 and this has been set up to allow port forwarding to 22.

I am not an IT expert but have tried everything but can't find a solution - have I missed something simple?

Could be that port forwarding a standard port like 22 is blocked for security reasons. One previous thread:

I escalated this thread and asked Google to answer whether port forwarding port 22 is blocked.

Ideally you shouldn't port forward and thus expose devices straight to the internet, especially not on a standard port like 22. Some port forward using a obfuscated port, chosing a random number between 49,152 and 65,535.

It's even better to use VPN (self hosted) or a service like Cloudflare Tunnel or Tailscale.
