I have 3 Google Nest WiFi Pro devices in a mesh network. When my phone is connected to the unit that is hardwired to the Internet it gets WiFi 6E. When it is connected to the other devices it gets WiFi 6. It's not causing any problems for me - I'm just curious why. Multiple searches haven't given me the answer. Anyone here know why?

Hi @uber_ray,

Thanks for posting in the community and sharing your question. It's great that you're curious about the technology behind your Nest Wifi Pro mesh network.

The reason you're experiencing different Wi-Fi speeds between your wired and wireless devices is likely due to the capabilities of the Nest Wifi Pro units themselves.

Wired Connection: When your device is connected directly to the wired Nest Wifi Pro unit, it can access the full capabilities of the 6 GHz band, which offers faster speeds and less congestion.

Wireless Connection: When connected to the other wireless Nest Wifi Pro units, your device might be using the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands, which may not have the same capacity as the 6 GHz band.

To summarize:

Nest Wifi Pro is designed to prioritize wired connections. This means devices connected directly to the wired unit will often have better performance.

Wi-Fi 6E is a newer technology: It offers faster speeds and less congestion, but not all devices or networks support it.

If you're looking to maximize Wi-Fi speeds throughout your home, consider adding more Nest Wifi Pro units or upgrading your network equipment to support Wi-Fi 6E.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thank you,

You may have misread my post, or I'm misunderstanding yours. My phone is connected wirelessly all the time. The wireless connection is to one of the 3 WiFi devices. All are the same model. I've just noticed it shows 6E when connected to the one that is directly connected to the Internet, but 6 when it is connected to one of the others.

Hi @uber_ray!

Thanks for your reply

To clarify:

When your phone is connected to the Nest Wifi Pro unit that is directly wired to your internet router, you're likely connecting to the 6 GHz band, which is part of Wi-Fi 6E.

When your phone is connected to the other Nest Wifi Pro units that are connected wirelessly, it might be using the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands, which are part of Wi-Fi 6.

This is because the wired connection provides a more direct and stable connection to the internet, allowing your device to access the full capabilities of your Wi-Fi network, including Wi-Fi 6E.

If you have any other questions or need further assistance, please let me know.

Regards,
