Rules for wifi firewall

I'm interested in installing a host firewall and perhaps an IDS for the laptop I use for school. I am wondering if there is some tool that can help me to understand the current firewall rules. Something as simple as iptables --list would be a starter, but if this uses a more complex ruleset, I do have some experience with firewalls and IDS as well.
