Device does not get allocated an IP address

Hi,

I have a Google Wifi mesh set up with 3 points.

The main router point is connected to my 16 port TP-Link switch. I have about 12 devices that connect to my network via this switch including a NAS, Printer, Smart TV, Laptops, etc.

There is one device that does not seem to be able to connect to my network. This device is an ethernet adapter that allows my House Alarm to communicate with an external monitoring and management system.

If I connect the device directly to the Google Wifi point, it is allocated an IP address and wrks perfectly. However I need to use the port on the Google Wifi to connect my switch, If i connect the device to my switch, it is not recognised.

The device was working perfectly, while connected to my switch but something seems to have changed in recent months.

This is the only device that does not work via the switch.

Does anyone nave any ideas?

damianb, you mention that you have a switch attached to the "main router". Is that the Google Wifi router or your ISP's modem/router?

Davy123, the switch is connected to the ethernet port on my Google Wifi router. I have two other Google Wifi points in my mesh network. The Google Wifi Router is connected directly to my broadband modem. There are no other modem/routers or other routers in the network.

I am have now narrowed down the issue to my switch. It is a TP Link TL-SG1016D (v7). I disconnected this switch and connected an old 8-port ASUS switch to the Google Wifi router - the ethernet adapter device works fine with this switch.

I am at a complete loss. All of my other devices can connect using the TP Link switch. All of the devices, including the troublesome one were working perfectly up until a few months ago. The only thing I can think of is that Google applied a software update to the Google Wifi system and somehow there is an incompatibility with the TP Link switch and the Ethernet Adapter device.

It really is strange.

In any case, I have purchased a new 16-port switch and hope that this newer device will resolve my issues.

Damianb, the TP switch is an unmanaged simple switch that should work in any Ethernet network using IP addressing. Unless the problem is limited to one port then I cannot imagine that it is a problem with the switch.
Incorrect default gateway IP address setting on the Ethernet adapter might cause a similar problem but since the adapter works fine on a ASUS switch then this cause is unlikely.
Anyway, sensibly, you have ordered a replacement switch so let us know how you get on.
