Hi,

I have a client that wants to use multiple Nest Protect (Gen 2) devices in a larger installation project. Approximately 10000 square feet over four levels. The product documentation suggests that each device only has a range of 50 feet to another device. My question is will these devices act as a mesh network across a longer range? If Device 1 is at zero feet, Device 2 is at 50 feet, Device 3 is at 100 feet, Device 4 is at 150 feet, and Device 5 is at 200 feet, when Device 1 alarms will device 5 also alarm even though they are 200 feet from one another? In other words, will the alarm signal be transmitted from Device 1 to Device 2, then Device 2 to Device 3, then Device 3 to Device 4, then Device 4 to Device 5, or does Device 1 have to directly reach Device 5 wirelessly for the interconnect to work? That's a great question about Nest Protect's mesh networking capabilities for your large project. While the product documentation mentions a 50-foot range, Nest Protect (Gen 2) utilizes a multi-hop communication system. This means:

Individual Range: Each Nest Protect can directly communicate with other devices within a 50-foot (15-meter) radius.

Mesh Networking: The beauty lies in their ability to relay signals through other Nest Protects in range. Imagine a chain reaction: if Device 1 detects smoke and can't directly reach Device 5 (200 feet away), it can send the signal to Device 2 (within 50 feet). Device 2 then relays the message to Device 3, and so on, until the entire network, including Device 5, is alerted.

In your example,

Device 1 can directly connect to Device 2 (within 50 feet).
Device 2 then picks up the signal and relays it to Device 3 (even though Device 3 is beyond 50 feet from Device 1).
This relaying process continues, ensuring Device 5 also alarms despite being 200 feet from the initial source.

I'd love to see the system allow more than 18 devices as well!
