Is there any way to tell when a Nest Protect device is going to expire just from the box? I see a lot of them for sale on third-party websites, and I wouldn't want to buy one of these devices only to find out after I've opened it that it's expiring in a year or two, or even less.

Yes there is, and a quick search would have found the answer.

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Protect/Expiration-Prior-to-Purchase/m-p/783235#M12760

Hi @rockerin,

Thank you for posting in the community! I understand you're looking for a way to identify the expiration date of a Nest Protect by the packaging before purchasing from a third-party seller.

@Frustratedddd, thanks for jumping in! Let me take it from here to provide some additional clarity.

At this time, the only way to find the expiration date for a Nest Protect is directly on the back of the device or via the Nest or Google Home app once the device has been set up. This information is not printed on the external retail packaging.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Best regards,

Brian.

@BrianGS I have to correct you here a little, as there is a way to confirm the year from the serial number. This is clearly shown on the external sealed packaging of the Nest Protect.

Look at the serial number on the box, then make note of the 6 digit number after AC, for example AC122476. The 2 middle numbers, in this example 24 is the start year, then add 10 to that giving you 34. This means the expiry date is 2034. You cannot tell the month, but this certainly gives you the end year. This is a very well known way of finding the expiration year! Please look at the link above where I have helped another user in the past.

Hi @Frustratedddd,

Thanks for this information. I understand you're sharing a method to identify the expiration year of a Nest Protect using the serial number found on the external packaging. However, the official ways to find this are by following the recommendations provided earlier.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Best regards,
Brian.

The method you explained is correct, but in a sealed box from a retailer not so easy! I don’t know many retailers that allow you to open a sealed box, then say sorry the item is out of date. After all if you look at some outlets selling the remaining Nest smokes, many are well out of date!
Now that Google have decided to stop production of one of the best smoke alarms around, people are trying to find the latest expiry date they can. The serial number at least gives you an end year date.

@BrianGS

Stop being difficult.

Using the serial number method described, the year of manufacture for the Nest Protect, 2nd Gen, can be determined. Then add 10 to that year to get the expiration year.

This method allows someone to determine the device's manufacturing year by reading the serial number on the outside of the packaging, without opening the sealed package.

I have verified that this method works by using my 5 recently expired Protects serial numbers, and it accurately provides the manufacturing year for each one.
