Protect wired power out

Hi there. I have 120V wired Nest Protect smoke and CO detectors. When I connect them to my home’s wiring (black, green, yellow, red) the nest app indicates there’s no power going into the unit (yellow light on the app only). everything else seems to be working. I tried pretty much every combination of wiring to connect the white and black connectors but nothing seems to work.
Question 1: does anyone know which colors to connect (I don’t have a white wire from the wall)

Question 2: if the unit is not receiving power, how long will the backup batteries last? In other words: can my wired device operate as a wireless device (albeit with the need to replace the batteries or recharge the unit more frequently)?

For help in wiring the Nest Protect correctly, I’d suggest having a Nest Pro set up and install all your Nest Protects for you. In the US, you can contact our installation partner, OnTech. After they've installed your Nest Protects, they'll give you a demo and answer any questions you have.
While we don’t have an exact figure on how long the backup batteries last when the wired Nest Protect is connected to power, battery life varies greatly depending on usage: how many times the Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) and sounds the alarm, how often the Path light turns on, where the Nest Protect is placed in the home, etc. Nest Protect batteries should probably last longer in that rarely-used guest room than in the kitchen. The more Nest Protect is used, the sooner it needs new batteries. Here are some tips on how to extend the battery life:

Turn the path light brightness to low or disable it entirely.
Turn off Nightly Promise. Nest Protect still speaks if the batteries get very low, and you should notice the battery status in the app.
