Nest Protect overheating

My mother in law is 89... when my wife took her home last night the Nest Protect was chirping indicating low battery. I asked her to bring the unit home to me, which she did. The three batteries on the left hand side were red hot... I took them out and left them outside. I have ordered replacement Ever ready lithium batteries, but am concerned about putting them in to a unit that has behaved in this way.

I’ve had this issue as well, twice. Google eventually replaced my units but it took quite a lot of checking in with them to get it done. I suggest that, in addition to continuing to follow up with Google for a replacement, you should take a moment to report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting

I did this after someone suggested in another thread and google appeared to be more responsive after my complaint was published and sent to them by the CPSC.

I would look for another brand to replace this with. Kidde makes one with more features (lile air quality monitoring) that works in Google Home.

These batteries hot enough to cause burns or start a fire has been reported dozens of times before by users. Google has not shown any interest in finding to root cause of this issue or acknowledging it is a problem beyond possibly warrantying a unit. (Check the expiration date on the one you get back.)

Hello. I'm having the same problem with my Nest Protect Smoke and CO2 detector. Got the low battery beep. After opening compartment, one of the batteries was extremely hot (slightly burned finger before realizing how hot it was) and there was a smoldering smell. Do not want to put new batteries in since this seems like a fire hazard. I filled out the form (from the link) well over a week ago and have not received any response by email.
