topic Bluetooth local integration in Smart Home Developer Forum

Hello, we have been asked to develop a lamp that can be controlled by Google Nest devices through local integration. Currently we are targeting Matter protocol, but our customer pointed out that some commercial devices (e.g. Philips Hue) achieve local connection through Bluetooth protocol.

We didn't find any specific information about how to do it (how to advertise, how provisioning works...) do you have any additional reference? Is Bluetooth an option to achieve the "Works with Google Home" badge? Thanks

Hello Lorenzo,
Bluetooth isn't currently supported for local integration with Google Home - only Wi-Fi based protocols like Matter and Thread are supported for the "Works with Google Home" program.

Philips Hue uses Wi-Fi (via their bridge) for Google Home integration, not direct Bluetooth. While Hue bulbs have Bluetooth for initial setup and direct phone control, the Google Home integration happens through their Wi-Fi bridge.

For your lamp project, you'll need to implement Matter protocol over Wi-Fi or Thread for official Google Home compatibility. Matter is the recommended approach for new devices.

Check the Matter developer documentation at matter for implementation details.
