Nest Hun Display says playing music but not playing

Hi, hopefully someone can help. I’ve looked at similar threads and haven’t saw anything that solves this exact issue.

I have several SONOS speakers and several Google devices. I have 3 rooms. Bedroom, kitchen and guest room.

In my bedroom I have a stereo pair of 2 Google home minis and a SONOS play 1.

In my guest room I have a Sonos beam (with Google assistant) and 2 Sonos play 2’s as surround sound.

And in my kitchen I have a Sonos era 300 and a stereo pair of Google home minis and a Google home nest hub.

When I am in my kitchen, and I ask Google to play music, the nest hub display will respond and say “sure here’s music from Spotify, playing on kitchen speaker” as it should, but then the music does not start. (The Google home minis do not respond, it’s as if it knows in the same room to give preference on response to the display.) Now if I unplug my nest hub display, stand in the same spot and give the same command (where the Google minis are the only devices in the room as a stereo pair) they will respond, saying the same thing and actually play music on the era 300 as one would expect.

The bedroom and guest room both work as one would expect, very seamlessly playing to the default speaker set.

all the speakers have the “default speaker” setting set to the correct speaker. For the nest hub, I’ve tried factory resetting, re-authorizing Spotify premium on both Google home/Sonos, I’ve tried moving the hub to a different room with the other speakers (it does the same thing - says it is playing but then doesn’t play anything), and even tried changing the default speaker to other speakers.

For whatever reason, this problem has just started to occur. It was never an issue before like 3 weeks ago. Please help!!! ☹️

It sounds like your Nest Hub is taking priority over the speakers. Try turning off the "media" settings on the Hub and double-check your speaker group setup in the Google Home app. If that doesn't work, re-sync your devices and make sure your Wi-Fi connection is strong.

Thanks for your reply. Is the media setting the same as the “let others control your cast media option” under the device settings in Google home?

I toggled it, gave the command and still the same thing.

I have already tried the resyncing option, unless it’s something specific directly under the Google hub display, but I have already factory reset it and unauthorized/reauthorized Spotify premium on both the Sonos and Google home side.

I don’t believe it’s an issue with the Spotify service authorization as I mentioned, if I unplug the Hub, give the same command in the same room, my Google home mini stereo pair responds, however it WILL play the music on the correct speaker.

This is also working in the other rooms. Is it possible to be an issue with the service if these are working correctly in the other rooms?

Hi,

Yes the issue is the same with other music apps (I tried Itunes as well).

I have not had any issues with the command processing from other devices. As I mentioned, in the same room here. I have the Google hub display and also 2 Google home minis set up as a stereo pair. If I unplug the Google Hub Display so that the Google Minis respond, the music will play correctly.

Yes the Sonos speaker system is linked to my Google Home, I am able to see all 7 of my speakers in the Google Home App.

Thanks for your reply. Another thing that we can try is to remove everything from the Google Home again, uninstall the app and re-install it, then create the speaker group, and also check if there is any update on the Sonos App. As a recommendation, you can also contact their customer service to confirm if everything is working with the Sonos software.

I have the same issue as described. When issuing voice commands via my Hub to my Sonos speakers, the Hub will respond saying that music is stated (no errors given) but no music starts. Chatting with Sonos, they say that they cant see any commands being sent to my Sonos speakers from the Hub (they review a diagnostic log sent from my system). Voice commands using my phone, connected to the same network as my Hub, works fine.

Yeah still no solution here. Works just fine on the minis. Seems like it may have been some update to the hub causing it. It used to work perfectly fine.

Hi,

I have the exact same issue. My nest says I it's playing music on the Sonos speaker but doesn't actually play anything. I have 2 minis that work perfectly well. The nest used to work fine with voice commands for Sonos, but has stopped recently.

Was there any update on this?
