Hi thanks for the reply, I always cast my music from an online medium primarily YouTube Music. The Music is downloaded to my device via the YouTube Music app and found in there. In both circumstances Nest skips all the Explicit media found in the playlist even if I ask it to play a song from there. Upon immediately disconnecting from Nest it will play explicit tracks through my phone instead as normal. I have found a workaround for now I have to cast via mirroring essentially making the app defunct of streaming to Nest. So yes definitely strange indeed. I'll have to see whether it affects other apps too but for now a short term solution is to indirectly use audio mirroring.

Hi all,

Does anyone know why my nest is skipping explicit music. I have tried turning off filters/restrictions in digital and wellbeing but it keeps saying "something went wrong" when I try to force playback. I have also made sure YouTube Music is not stopping playback either via restrictions so don't know what it could be. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi, have you tried using the audio mirroring function in the Google Home app. Shouldn't have to do this as I believe it's a YouTube problem. I'm pretty sure it's bugged. Some how I think the content restrictions for some reason overides the nest especially if it will let you screen cast it over. But hopefully it will get resolved.

I honestly don't know but suspect that it works flawlessly if you use your personal device with headphones too.

Here are my guesses: YTM to avoid explicit lyrics skips those songs so as not to offend so when you mirror the true source is your phone. The second part is this -- when playing music, more often than not, it's from the cloud even though it's on your phone unless the assistant is told to play it from your library -- cloud music playback is generally sterile and defaults always to the clean version for playback it's done that way because it's more efficient for the service and uses less user bandwidth while possibly trying to avoid fallout for foul language on an open speaker. Third, without using voice commands manual selection of explicit version will be played because the user has physically, deliberately expressed that's what they want to hear, and it's not a mistake of voice instruction from some random operator, say your kid, or anyone else who also happens to be in the home. Keep in mind any random person can call for music and the default accountholder's music choices and selections will play.

Let me ask this when you say "cast" explain what you mean by that; people tend to use that interchangeably but it makes a difference. To me, casting means you've clicked the cast button on a handheld, thereby directing music from the source (handheld) to mimic play from that device. Absent that process it's streaming, so I just want to be clear I'm understanding how you play music.

That all said, it's probably not solvable by Nest. YTM is programmed and designed to work with your speaker, much like a smart TV monitor is hostage to the content streamer. How YTM allows us, users, to access the content and the safeguards for lyrics is their secret.

I literally have the opposite problem. I have restricted explicit on all of my nest my home minis and you tube music and it still plays it. The only thing that it doesn't do is show me the name of the explicit song in the home app when it's playing. Google support and you tube music have no solutions. So my 9 yr can listen to any song at all. Charming.

I'm not surprised you got no help talking to Nest Home support. As indicated earlier, music access is service-dependent and what it allows the Google Assistant on the speaker to access. We've linked our accounts to a speaker, that's it -- the speaker isn't the source of the music. Whoever your music service is, is responsible for that interaction and enforcing the no explicit lyrics on your account.

Some may think "but it's all Google" it's still a different division. As I've learned, they don't all sit down the hall from each other but sometimes each group is in a different city miles apart.

Well i don't agree it's all to do with the music service provider because the speaker will let me play the song it just won't let me cast the song to the speaker. 🤷 Thanks anyway

I have the same problem but it doesn't seem to be related just to the Nest device. In fact, if I listen a particular music album using YouTube Music as a source, most songs are skipped by Nest but if I listen the same album using Amazon Music as a source, Nest allows me to listen all the songs.
