I used to set a timer at night via a routine to play my sleep playlist for 2 hours before turning off. Now google just says it can only set a sleep timer when media is playing.

At first, I thought this was just because I had chromecast audio as my default speaker. So, I ended up trying to create a group to include the hub aswell as my chromecast audio. And yet, it still tells me they can't sent up a sleep timer since there is no media. There is media. The hub is displaying Spotify!

Any solutions for this one? It's been going on for months and I'm at my wits end.

Same problem here. Nest Hub 1st gen.

One (very inconvenient) option that works for me is to ask the Nest Hub to play music, and then, via the display add the other speakers I want to activate. (I have four different Google speakers them in my bedroom.)

Then I can tell the Nest Hub to stop the music in 20 minutes, or whatever I like.

Not the alarm. It is the sleep timer I'm having problem with. It makes the speaker turn off the music after the set time. That used to work fine for me until the operating system in the Google Nest Hub was changed to Fuchsia.

Thanks for the effort Jake, but unfortunately I think this is an all Google issue. Before Google changed the OS of the Google Nest hub it worked just fine. But when the OS changed this feature was ruined.

I'm still having the same issue whenever I go "hey google turn off the music in 2 hours"

It then goes "sorry I can't do that sleep timers can only be set if there's media playing", even though I can clearly see it on the display that there is media playing.

It doesn't matter if I play in a shared speaker group that includes the nest hub, it still fails to recognise the media.

Right now my only work around is to create a playlist that's approx 2 hours in duration and turn off auto playlist repeat.

The Google speaker groups are a joke. I'm so extremely frustrated at this point. Since I bought my Google speakers I have spent probably 50+ hours to try to get them to work. For periods of time they work fine, and exactly as I want them to. But then, all of a sudden, nothing works as intended, without me changing anything at all.

Regarding the sleep timer, it had not been working since the Nest Hub got the firmware update which included the new operating system.

Last thing I've done is deleting the Nest hub from my home, then factory reset my Nest hub. I uninstalled the Google Home app, installed an older version (as suggested in a reddit thread).

When the older version was installed I could see a lot of old "ghost" speaker groups, which I deleted. I then updated Google home app to the latest version. Added Nest hub to my home again. Added all my other devices, which I also had factory reset before this.

Then I added new speaker groups again. But the Nest hub will still not set a sleep timer for the music when it is playing music as part of a speaker group.

If I specifically play music only on the Nest hub it has no problem setting a sleep timer.

As I wrote in a recent reply to Jake I have factory reset all 10 devices I have, including the Nest hub. That did not help. At least not when I tell the Nest hub to "turn off the music in <duration>" and it is playing music as part of a speaker group.

This is the technical information I have about my Nest hub:

Firmwareversion for system: 6.20211109.1.3166240
Firmwareversion for Cast: 1.60.305621
Language: Svenska
Country code: SE

Just tried what you've advised. It still really doesn't work.

But the work around of saying "hey Google play xxxx on shared for yy minutes" works.

However, it won't do it unless the display itself is included in the shared speaker group. Which is annoying but I suppose it's better than before.

Preciously, my nest hub main purpose is as a display only and a google assistant. I didn't like the speaker system on the hub. Unfortunately muting the hub also silences the assistant.

If @Mrodin69 was right and it's the firmware update, is there anyway we can downgrade and stop the auto updates?

An update to ruin things is quite useless, and I've found that the Google assistant has become dumber over the years than smarter.

Unfortunately that is my experience as well, that the speakers have become worse. Not in all aspects though, but as a music device, which is the main reason for me to have so many.

I've had issues with google not understanding me or having to repeat multiple times what I need it to do. Sometimes I give up and just ask alexa to do it since I have both.

I'm actually debating fully switching and buying the echo link. But it feels wasteful since I have so many devices in the Google home ecosystem that I can't transfer over and will need to replace.

It's hard to understand why they'd roll out an update that would make things exponentially worse.
